The past tense occurs in two primary forms in Spanish: Perfect and Imperfect.  The perfect tenses refer to completed, finite actions.  The imperfect tenses refer to habitual or on-going, indefinite actions (no time period is specified).

Past Vocabulary  Necessary words for talking in the past tense.

Preterite Past  Simple past or "Perfect" past.

Imperfect Past  On-going or repeated past.

Contrasting Preterite and Imperfect Past Tenses.  This is one of the more difficult concepts for English speakers.  Students in SPAN 1100 will begin to cover this around the mid-term of the semester.  Second year students will review this in the first semester of SPAN 2000.

Compound or Perfect Tenses (Haber + Past Participle)  This allows you to create Perfect forms in any time frame or tense--completed actions in the future, past, present, etc.  While this is introduced in SPAN 1100, it is not thoroughly covered until SPAN 2100 (the fourth semester).
The subjunctive forms also play into narration in the past, but these issues are not dealt with until the end of the third semester SPAN 2000.  First year students should not concern themselves with this material!
