Description:

This course surveys all aspects of technical services including: acquisitions, bibliographic control (cataloging and classification), serials management, government documents, repair and maintenance of resources, library automation, and basic budget management. Emphasis will be placed on the philosophy, policies and procedures of each service area and how they interrelate. Instruction in the use of automated technical services database systems will be provided.

Learner Outcomes/Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to...

  • Articulate an understanding of the role of technical services in the operations of a library or information agency
  • Describe the different functions of paraprofessionals in the operations of technical services
  • Understand the use of computers and automated systems in performing technical services operations
  • Articulate the role and function of bibliographic utilities and networks in relationship to the technical services functions of a local library or information agency
  • Articulate in a detailed manner the roles, and functions of, and interrelationships between:
    • acquisitions
    • cataloging and classification
    • serials management
    • government documents management
    • material repair and preservation
    • budget management
