Description:
This
course provides an introduction to the cataloging and classification of
information resources, including books, periodicals, audiovisual, computer
software, CD-ROM and Internet materials. Emphasis will be placed on the use
of MARC records for copy cataloging. Students will be introduced to AACR2
and the use of the Dewey and Library of Congress classification schemes.
Students will also be taught how to use Library of Congress Subject Headings
and other controlled vocabularies to enhance access to information.

classification as it applies to library and information service settings

familiarity and appropriate application of cataloging tools

descriptive cataloging standards

analysis standards

an ability to apply international cataloging and classification rules to

You may find it useful to purchase your own copy of the Anglo-American
Cataloging Rules, 2nd edition, 2002 revision, 2005 update. This is published by
the
American Library Association.
I will be giving the information on AACR2 to the bookstore as an optional
text. It can be purchased directly from ALA as well. Members of
ALA receive a 10% discount; student memberships are available at
significantly reduced costs over regular membership.
