Interested in taking a class from me?  So far (7 Sept. 2006), my rating on RateMyProfessors.com is a toss-up: http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=569200

Here's some information about my education, and where I've worked, to help you know something about me.

Formal education:

  • Master of Library and Information Science, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  I completed this degree while working full-time with a family, through a distance learning program, so I have some understanding of competing demands on one's life.
  • Graduate Certificate in Information Systems, University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota.  The best course I ever took was part of this program: a technical writing class.  Invaluable.
  • B.A. in Studio Art, Humanities minor, Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota.  Being a studio art major (oil painting was my specialty) and now working a great deal with technology, I like to say that this proves that even non-techie people can do techie kinds of things.

Selected elements of my working education:

  • Technology Services Manager, Minnesota Literacy Council, St. Paul, Minnesota.  Working in a non-profit, I wore a number of hats.  I trained adult literacy instructors and tutors to use technology in their teaching, and I was the one to call when someone's email wasn't working. "Information management" at multiple levels.
  • Coordinator, Minnesota Literacy Resource Center, University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota.  I ran a special library for literacy practitioners, promoting online access to resources and, "sensible, sustainable use of technology."
  • Contractor, American Library Association, Chicago, Illinois.  I've worked off and on with ALA on some technology and literacy projects, with their Office of  Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS).  Most recently, I've worked on their BuildLiteracy.org project, to help build literacy coalitions.
  • Acquisitions Coordinator, James J. Hill Reference Library, St. Paul, Minnesota.  One of my "traditional" library jobs, in a special library.
