Your
Web Assignment:
 |
MUST be done as a Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format attachment
to an e-mail. You
can also use HTML format. Do not save your document
in non-standard formats such as Microsoft Works.
This format is not easily readable by people who use Word,
and it is not readable at all by people who don't own
Word or Works. |
 |
DO NOT send me a link to your article.
I will simply reject them.
You must copy the text of the article.
This is because many web pages, especially ones in Latin
America, are very temporary. Saving a link does
not guarantee it will be there tomorrow. Whole web
sites often disappear overnight in Chile, Guatemala, Ecuador,
etc. |
 |
DO NOT write your essay or submit your article in the e-mail
message itself.
You must use an attachment. Don't give it
to me on floppy disk either. I want to keep them
all in the SAME format. |
 |
It MUST contain accent marks and other diacritical marks like
upside-down question marks. |
 |
MUST be an article that relates to a topic with a very specific
contextual relevance to a Spanish-speaking country.
No articles about general topics like Saddam Hussein,
or about global overpopulation, or about abortion rights
in general. It must relate to a specific issue in a specific country or
at least for the Spanish-speaking world.
(You can use an article about abortion rights in
Mexico, or an article about overpopulation of Mexico City.)
As a reminder, this is what the syllabus stated:
|
- Find a newspaper article of at least 250 words on the
internet. It must be in Spanish, and it must be about an issue
that is relevant to a Spanish-speaking country, and it
must be an issue that is not widely reported in the American
media. Pick local issues with some political,
social, economic or otherwise ethical importance. Print the
article and submit it with your assignment. Do not use
articles about general topics like Overpopulation, or Pollution,
or Drug Laws. These can be good topics if they
are dealt with in a way that is specifically related to a
particular country or geographical area in a Spanish-speaking
country.
DO NOT use foreign characters for your file name.
For instance, do not title your document: español.doc
This is because there is a strong possibility that somewhere
along the line the file will become unreadable.
Submit your attachment with a filename that begins with your
name: darren_witwer_essay.doc
and darren_witwer_article.doc
Be sure to include your name at the top of BOTH documents.
Make sure that the title and date of the newspaper and the
basic URL for the paper are included at the top of the page
too. You don’t
need to give me the specific URL for the page you sent me.
You can combine both the article and the essay into a single
document. Call it:
darren_witwer_both.doc
You can use HTML
format for the attached document, but don’t do this unless you
are fairly familiar with computers and HTML.
Example: Your next paper should come to me as a word document
titled “darren_witwer_article.doc”
The header should read:
Article submitted by Darren Witwer
From El País Digital (España) el
26 de octubre de 1999
www.elpais.es
The original headline from the article should follow this.
LAS COMPUTADORAS DESTRUYEN EL MUNDO
Your essay should come as a word document titled “darren_witwer_essay.doc”
The headers should read:
Essay submitted by Darren Witwer
Reaction to the article entitled:
“Las computadoras destruyen el mundo”
In
conclusion--these assignments should not be considered serious
research/investigation assignments. Rather, they are informal
assignments in which I am testing to see that you can:
